Throughout the week, the AFA, in collaboration with Plastic Punch, hosted a series of informative and engaging activities to inspire positive change.

World Environment Day: A Call to Action
On World Environment Day, a captivating environment conference took center stage. Mr. Enock Boadu Amo and Mme Sandra Kyereh, esteemed technocrats from the Ministries of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and Environmental Protection, shed light on the crucial steps the government is taking to tackle plastic pollution. Their insights sparked a dynamic conversation about collaborative efforts for a cleaner future. Mme Helene Geneau-Okutue, Director of Alliance Française Accra, further emphasized the AFA’s commitment to sustainability by highlighting the ongoing “No Plastics” campaign. This initiative seeks to gradually eliminate single-use plastics within the AFA premises, leading by example.

World Ocean Day: Taking Action on the Beach
World Ocean Day saw the AFA community in collaboration with Plastic Punch, embark on a vital
beach clean-up exercise at the Regional Maritime “Mighty” Beach, a haven for sea turtles, unfortunately burdened with plastic and clothing waste. Dignitaries, including Mme Kim Suyeon, wife of the South Korean Ambassador to Ghana, joined the enthusiastic participants. The clean-up commenced with an energetic aerobics session, followed by a comprehensive briefing session. Armed with knowledge and dedication, participants diligently removed waste from the beach, contributing directly to a cleaner environment for marine life. The day culminated in a relaxing atmosphere with soothing music by Nene Narh and delicious local refreshments, fostering a sense of community and shared accomplishment.

A Week of Inspiration and Action
Beyond the World Environment Day conference and World Ocean Day clean-up, the AFA Environmental Week offered a diverse program. Art exhibitions by Bee Arthur, Elena Asbert Sagasti, Littlebigesi, Tei Huagie and Elom Ayayee used powerful visuals and installations to depict the environmental crisis. Thought-provoking panel discussions, solution-based presentations, and an environment fair provided valuable insights and practical solutions. The Community Old Clothes Drive encouraged responsible consumption by offering an alternative for unwanted clothing.
